Reasons behind the Copenhagen Conference

In the name of Allah the all-Merciful the Ever-Merciful, and peace and blessings be upon His messenger.

Only Eight days left to our departure to Denmark, to the dialogue our young Muslims and scholars will start.  In fact, I did not come today to talk about the Denmark issue in particular.  I am here today to make use of this issue and all its variables in setting distinctive principles through which we can express how we foresee the future in the light of these principles.  Moreover, what are the principles that would survive with us in our struggle for revival in the next 20 years, because such a struggle will witness numerous incidents of different kinds?

Therefore, I want to make use of today's speech in setting two main principles.  I do not intend to talk in details about the Denmark issue, as this issue has already been settled.  I came today to talk about something much graver.

Do you remember the incident of Ifk (falsehood) where the Prophet's wife was accused and her honor was threatened, etc., how did the companions of the Prophet deal with this thorny issue?

They considered it a grave matter affecting their lives.

On the other hand, how did the Qur'an deal with it?

The Qur'an transformed this incident from a temporary incident bound by time into principles for the nation to implement until the Day of Judgment.  The Qur'an changed it from being a passing incident into a practical incident, from a special case to a rule for Muslims to deal with such situations until the Day of Judgment. Accordingly, this incident turned into a rule for the whole nation.  I am looking upon the Denmark issue in the same manner.  We should come out of this incident with a set of rules that would back up our revival.  If we want to achieve a revival in the 20 years to come, we must take notice now because history repeats itself and such incidents are recurring.

Therefore, I am here today to talk about two principles, which, in my opinion, governed the Denmark issue.  Let me start with the first principle; let me start with a story you all know, and we have talked about it before in the Seera.  It is the story of Khabbab Ibnul-Aratt, the great companion.  I am going to start with this story in order to explain the idea.  Khabbab Ibnul-Aratt went to the Prophet (SAWS) exhausted by the long struggle against insults, abuse and oppression.  He went to the Prophet (SAWS) while he was sitting in the shade of the Ka'ba, laying over his Burd (i.e. covering sheet).  Khabbab said to him, "Would you seek help for us? Would you pray to Allah for us?" The Prophet sat up, his face flushed with fury, and said, "Among the nations before you a (believing) man would be put in a ditch that was dug for him, and a saw would be put over his head and he would be cut into two pieces; yet that (torture) would not make him give up his religion. His body would be combed with iron combs that would remove his flesh from the bones and nerves, yet that would not make him abandon his religion. By Allah, this religion (i.e. Islam) will prevail till a traveler from Sana (in Yemen) to Hadrarmaut will fear none but Allah, or a wolf as regards his sheep, but you (people) are hasty.”[1]

This is the first rule.  How come?!  Let us take this hadith and analyze it deeply because it is exactly the Denmark issue.

Let us take it step by step.  Khabbab is going to the Prophet, burdened by injustice, torture, and abuse, complaining from the long years of endurance.  He had enough, and wanted this suffering to end, asking until when.

Do you remember the insults they used to sing about the Prophet, calling him Mudhammam[2] and writing poetry to abuse him?

Do you remember how they used to make fun of him (SAWS) and spread this name among them, and the one who started all this was a woman who ridiculed his name in a fabricated poem about how they were going to defy his religion and in which she called him "Mudhammam"?

While the companions used to suffer from these insults, the Prophet (SAWS) used to calm them down saying, “leave them as they are insulting Mudhammam while I am 'Muhammad'.”  Do you remember the different forms of insults he went through?

At another occasion, Okba Ibn-Abu-Ma'eet went and slaughtered a camel, took out its guts and put it on the prophet's back while he was prostrating in prayer.  The prophet remained still until his daughter Fatima came and took it off of him.  She was crying from the humiliation her father was subjected to; the Prophet (SAWS) told her not to cry, and that Allah (SWT) will support her father.

Do you remember the other incident, when the same person Okba Ibn-Abu-Ma'eet took off his gown, twisted it to make a rope out of it then went on tightening it around the neck of our beloved (SAWS), while he was praying in front of the Ka'ba, until he fell from suffocation.  Khabbab Ibnul-Arat himself suffered several hardships.  Do you remember what happened to him before he went to the Prophet?  They used to inflame coal and place Khabbab on it until the flesh of his back melted and turned off the fire.  This was his state when he went to the Prophet, tired from being tortured and from hearing the Prophet insulted.  What was peculiar about his request, "Would you seek help for us? Would you pray to Allah for us?"

Notice that he read in the Qur'an the stories of 'Ad, Thamud, and other nations that defied their Prophets, and how Allah avenged his Prophets. Therefore, he came to the Prophet to ask him to supplicate against the disbelievers, because Allah will answer his prayers and grant them victory.  What is expected here, knowing how tender and merciful the Prophet is, is that he would pat on Khabbab's shoulder and try to calm him down.  On the contrary, he (SAWS) sat straight and his face turned red with anger, why was he angry?

Because the Prophet (SAWS) has a goal that he wants to accomplish.  He has a goal that he wants to accomplish in twenty years of time. Truly, his goal was accomplished after twenty long years.

Note how Khabbab came to talk about the agonies of the past and the present, while the Prophet talked about the hopes of the future.  Khabbab told him that the abuse has become unbearable, but the Prophet became angry because Khabbab was not living the dream.  The Prophet has a dream, and the Prophet will show him the dream, and explain in to him.  The Prophet will show him the dream of the state of this nation in twenty years to come.  Listen to what he (SAWS) says to him, "By Allah, this religion (i.e. Islam) will prevail till a traveler from Sana (in Yemen) to Hadrarmaut will fear none but Allah, or a wolf as regards his sheep, but you (people) are hasty".

Notice that these words were uttered while the Arabian Peninsula was full of robbers, devoid of safety, and kids were stolen from their families, remember Zaib Ibn-Haretha?

The Prophet (SAWS) is depicting the dream, of how the nation will be like after twenty years, and talking first about safety.  It is as if he was talking about something unbelievable, just like we are talking now about a revival in twenty years, and people ridicule our dream.  The Prophet is telling Khabbab that the first pillar in this dream or this goal is safety.  Then he moves yet to another point, 'a traveler from Sana (in Yemen) to Hadrarmaut will fear none but Allah', that faith will fill the hearts.  At that time, faith was not filling the hearts.  Hence, the dream was about safety, and faith. The third point he added, a traveler from Sana (in Yemen) to Hadrarmaut will fear none but Allah, or a wolf as regards his sheep, is about prosperity. He meant that sheep will wander safely across the peninsula, while at the time, they were suffering from extreme poverty.  He was talking about economic development flourishing in this barren land.  Thus, the Prophet showed him three elements of the new dream.

While Khabbab was talking about the agonies of the past and the present, the Prophet wanted to talk about the future. You are telling me supplicate against them, and I am telling you and what about our goal? You are tell me let them burn in hell, and I am telling you again what about our goal? Can you see where Khabbab is coming from and where he will end up? The Prophet (SAWS) took him to the future, showing him the great leap that will take place and the development and prosperity yet to come. Notice how the Prophet stressed the three most needed traits of the time, safety, faith, and prosperity.  The dream stemmed from the three things society needs despite how far fetched it may have seemed.  Has anyone got the idea I am aiming at? I want to say that the Prophet did not desire to be a reaction for Khabbab's pain, but rather, he wanted Khabbab to live the dream.  Hence, he ended his talk by saying 'you are hasty', because there will come a time when the dream becomes a reality.  However, it will not come true by reactions, but by hard work and determination.

Twenty years later, all what the Prophet (SAWS) said came true.  The day came when " a lady in a Howdah traveling from Al-Hira will (safely reach Makkah and) perform the tawaf[3] of the Ka'ba, fearing none but Allah."[4] Khabbab was influenced by observing the anguish of the past, while the Prophet (SAWS) was influenced by foreseeing the hopes of the future.  Khabbab was influenced by the lengthy injustice they have undergone for years, while the Prophet was influenced by the dream they will accomplish in years to come.  Khabbab was influenced by the passion of a true believer who loves his religion and his Prophet, while the Prophet was the loyal mind and the wise planner for the future.  Khabbab was influenced by the reaction, while the Prophet was influenced by the sense of initiation and ingenuity for the sake of his goal and belief.

After telling you Khabbab's story with the Prophet (SAWS), what Khabbab said and how the Prophet replied, let us see how it is manifested in our lives today, not just in the Denmark issue because it will come to an end sooner or later, but let us set a rule for a nation that is aspiring to achieve a revival.

The rule says that there are two schools of thought, one that believes that the nation should react in relation to our long and difficult history over the past twenty years, while the other one believe that the nation's actions should be in accordance with our dream for the coming twenty years.  Can you sense the difference between the two schools?

In line with the story I have just said, the nation should react according to what we plan for our coming twenty years. The first school believes that we should go up against all abuses of the past and the present through all possible legitimate ways.

On the other hand, the second school believes that the calculated planning for the future through a concrete and clear goal is what is going to change our present reality when it is accomplished.  One school is like the ambulance car, whenever a crisis befalls, it runs here and there, and we cannot do without the ambulance car.  In contrast, the other one believes that the nation must plant the seeds no matter how strong the wind is, and wait for the harvest season.  We have two schools of thought, and both schools deserve to be respected.  Thus, the relationship between the two schools must be built around esteem, respect and compassion, because as I remember, Dr. Ali Goma' the Grand Mufti of Egypt said that there are roles and there are cases that were not comprehended by many due to their complexity.  Both schools are worthy of respect, especially when they are both sincere in their intentions.

However, it is the right of the youth to think of the future, plan, and build our tomorrow.  I want to tell you that the Denmark issue was not sudden; all our moves originated from Life Makers.  On the 15th of April 2004, the date of the episode, we said dream about your country in twenty years time.  When we said these things, we had the story of Khabbab with the Prophet (SAWS) in mind.  What we had in mind then was that the Prophet seeks the future, and wants our deeds not to be merely reactions.  I recall that in these days everyone started to send their dreams, youth, women, children, and everyone.  We added a counter to our website in order to calculate the number of people interacting with this idea, and to our surprise the number exceeds 700.000, because people wished for someone to tell them or to come to an agreement on what our future would be like.  After receiving the 700.000 dreams, we encouraged people to sort these dreams, so they started to talk about their dreams and their problems like unemployment, health, education, religiousness, etc. Consequently, we found ourselves returning again to the Prophet's hadith: safety, financial state, and faith.

Thus we chose the slogan for our revival in the coming twenty years to be 'Development through Faith', and we began from this point carrying out our dream. We want to carry the initiative of having a visualization of the future.  In the last episode of my program 'On the Path of the Beloved' I stressed one point very clearly, that is we should learn from our Prophet to be initiators who plan for the future, and I stressed the fact that there would be no hope for this nation to be revived in the coming twenty years without a dream and a vision.

I still remember that the companions of the Prophet disliked the treaty of Hudaybiya because they believed it meant that they were wasting their rights, and Omar Ibnul-Khattab complained to the Prophet about it.  Time passed and the outcome of the treaty proved to be much greater than they had anticipated.  The number of people who joined Islam in these two years exceeds the number of those who joined ever since the Prophet started calling for Islam owing to the fact that the Prophet planned for the future, and approves some useless and side compromises that will not affect them at this stage.

I would like to stress the fact that what I am currently saying does not mean that we are against opposition, or that we proceed with our planning regardless of what is happening to our nation. I have not said so, and it is not in my hands to say so. That is why at the start of the Denmark dilemma we backed up opposition and boycott. However, what I am saying is that we must not forget about initiation, we must not neglect our future. Our nation must not always stand in the position of reaction without determining its own course of action for the future. This is our position and this is what we have said. In fact, our existing generations have forgotten about initiation, and when we were forced to oppose the tragic events we forgot to plan for the future.

Let me honest with you, if we do not plan for our future, if our governments, scholars, scientists, and creative thinkers do not pay attention to the dreams of the youth and amended them, we will never achieve anything. These dreams are still immature and in need for fixing and amendment, but this school of thought must not be neglected. In contrast, we have all paid attention to some drawings of a despicable person, and we have all searched for them. Isn't it more logical to pay attention to the drawings of the youth picturing their countries after twenty years from now? And see what they have done? That is why I am urging the scholars of the nation to take notice of these dreams. The mature generation and the scholars should equally pay attention to this issue just like the young generation did. If we did not draw our dreams ourselves, others will do them on our behalf, and if this is the case, we will have various pictures for our future not just one. At this point in time, we will not be looking at a bright future at all. Honestly speaking, isn't our current state the result of others drawing our future for us 100 years ago? Aren't our problems a consequence of not drawing our dreams with our own hands?  Isn't this school of thought worthy of respect for thinking this way, with all due respect to the other school as well?

This was the first principle.

We said that we want to draw from all these events two principles.  These two principles will regulate our revival project in the twenty years to come.  The first principle is that there are two schools of thought, and both are good.

The first school of thought calls to stand up to any attacks and face any past or present attacks.

The second school emphasises building the future and making plans to achieve this goal, while preserving our rights and not giving them up.  However building the future is what will change the current situation and what will reform everything.  We will focus on a dream and will not be diverted from it by any events here or there, while preserving our rights.

That was the first basis, and the second school of thought that works to build the future is the outcome of the incident related earlier between the Prophet and Khabbab Ibnul- Arat.  Khabbab was talking about the painful past and tormenting present.  The Prophet took him in a totally different direction, let us build the future.  He built him a beautiful dream, that provides safety, faith and economic boom.  Inshallah, our dream will be similar and the future will be ours.  This is the point of departure we based ourselves upon.

The second rule in which Denmark is only a temporary situation but that still serves as a practical example: what do we know about Muslims in the West and in Europe?

What is the situation in Europe and what are the repercussions?

As a person living in the West since 2002 and till 2006, due to circumstances that made me an eye-witness, and seeing is not like hearing.

Our brothers and sisters in Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Morocco wake up one morning to see caricatures… They shouted and that is their right… They objected and that is also their right… They boycotted and that is their right, away from violence.

However what you saw was the forth act, you did not see events from the beginning.  Therefore you need to see things from the onset to know where to place this specific event and evaluate its importance according to the development of the situation, and how it affects the rest of the film and the people in it.

As an eyewitness, I will relate to you clips of the film and I will not choose the odd ones out, I will choose clips of important influence.  I will not narrate in any scientific jargon.  I will tell you stories from the west.

I will start with stories of Muslims in the west.  I see the picture and I will describe it.

There is a doctor in the picture. His name is Omar Al-Sheik.  He is a pious Muslim who has given his clinic much of his attention.  Two weeks ago, the Ministry of health got in touch with him and asked him to be responsible for monitoring all the clinics in the Midlands, regardless of who runs these clinics, be it Muslim or Christian or Jewish or Hindu Doctors.  You are the best in the Midlands and we would like you to assume this responsibility.  Not many people know this story about Dr Omar Al- Sheik, maybe no one at all.

Another clip shows a Muslim that entered Europe with a fake visa and claimed unemployment and was shown on TV, because on the other side there are conniving people, who dislike Islam and are enemies.  He appeared on TV saying we will kick you out of Britain (while claiming unemployment) and we will kick you out of your land and take your women and daughters as booty.  This is what some newspapers reported.  When we enter your countries, we enter with the aim to conquer and terrorise so that your wealth and women become a legitimate acquisition.  And if we forget to declare this intention upon entering we leave and renew this intention then go back so that we are entitled to your wealth and women:  A distorted and rare example that received wide publicity.

In another clip I see Ousama in an Austrian village.  He is originally from Syria.

He went to the fire service and volunteered there (because there fire service works on volunteers).  They looked at him and laughed, (all these stories I am telling are true), they laughed and said, “But we don’t only extinguish fire in Muslim houses”.  He said, “Why do you say that?”  They replied, “Because you only worry about your affairs in our country, you are here to take but not to give.  But our service covers all houses not just Muslim houses.”  He replied, “And I am here to extinguish fire in any house as well.”  He volunteered in the fire service and within two months he became the most popular person in the village.  One villager came and said to him “Islam is really beautiful.”  This is how his place in society changed.

I see in one of the scenes an Arabic young man, his story was published a few years back.  He went to the underground late at night to make sure that there is no one around him.  He brought along a knife and started to rip the fabric of the chairs as vengeance.  He did not realise that the cameras in the train were filming him.

The news appeared in newspapers and satellite channels showing him ripping the chairs.  I witnessed these stories and I respect what it means to be a witness in our religion.  Therefore I am showing you a wide spectrum.

I see in the picture Dr Hani Al-Banna who represents a great organization, Islamic relief.  They spread goodness in the world.  He is a personality that makes Muslims in Europe and westerners proud, because there is in Europe someone called Hani Al-Banna.

I see in the picture my wife.  After the events of 7/7, she took the bus, in her hijab.

The bus stop, and the people in the bus told her either you are searched or you leave the bus, although there is no law that allows that.  My wife felt humiliated, she refused to be searched, she said, “I have done nothing wrong to be searched.”  The bus remained stationary.  Eventually she had to leave, hurt and crying.  To her surprise an English woman followed her out of the bus and said to her “forgive us, but we are afraid and we do not want to die.”

I see Dan, who is an English young man who converted to Islam when he saw his friend take a paper from the floor and put it in the bin.  He said to his friend, “I did not know Arabs bothered about these things.”  He replied, “No, our Prophet ordered us to do this.”   He said, “Your Prophet who lived in the desert ordered you not to leave paper thrown on the floor?”  He told him, “Well, let me tell you what else he told us…”

Dan converted to Islam.  He was an average student.  His parents would not speak to him after he converted, but he became one of the top students in the faculty of medicine after he converted.  He kept his ties with his family and married an Egyptian girl who was studying there.  His family welcomed the marriage.  He is a beautiful example of success.

I see in the picture residential areas where Muslims are concentrated, they buy around each other.  I would advise you not to go there.  Europeans refuse to go there, because drugs are widespread in these areas.  Sometimes crime is also widespread.

I see in the picture, Muslims who have lived in the west and excelled and when they excelled they became ashamed of their faith (i.e. Islam) and considered that part of being a westerner attitude is to mock Islam and Muslims, only to be despised by the West along with our nation, our heritage and our civilisation.

I see a great place in Birmingham called “Amanat Mu’ath” run by our Yemeni brothers. It is a place of knowledge culture, sport, prayer, worship and good.  Unfortunately, it is exclusively Muslim.  No westerners go there, not because they (the Yemenis) did that purposely but because their way of thinking lead them to isolation.

I see exceptional preachers who once they started to appear in the west and speak the language of the west, the doors of satellite channels opened up to them.  However, they are few in number and do not change public opinion.

This is the picture I see.  These are the Muslims in the west but what about the non-Muslims.  I told you, you came in the fourth act, you came in with the publication of the caricatures.  Let us look at non-Muslims in the West.

I see a man who owns a satellite channel and who feels deep hatred towards Muslims.  He only shows on his channel the worst possible image of Islam and Muslims.  If a decent Muslim appears, he takes the worst word in his speech and brands him with it.

I see in the picture, Dr Mamoun Al-Mubayyed, an eminent professor in sociology.  He lives in Ireland.

He moved with his veiled wife and children to a big house.  On the evening of the move, it was raining and there was a power cut which is very rare in Europe.

They heard a knock on the door.  It was an old Irish lady, their neighbour.

She said, “I brought you some candles.  This is your first day here and I was worried you would sleep in the dark with young children.”  He was amazed at her gesture, almost in disbelief.

I see, Mido, the famous Arabic Tottenham football player.  On his first day on the pitch, some racist spectators started to shout abuse at him just for being a Muslim Arab.  However, the rest of the viewers applauded him and encouraged him.

I see my neighbour here in Britain, and how in the first week we moved in he used to look at us in disdain and bitterness for living next door to such people.

After a month of good Islamic neighbourly treatment, when he found out that I travelled a lot, he would wake up around six or seven in the morning and remove the ice off my wife’s car before she takes our son to school.  This is him before and after.

I see in the British airport, a clearance officer in charge of checking passports.  They are the gatekeepers of Britain.  I see a veiled woman.  Sometimes it is difficult in Arabic countries for veiled women to work in some positions.  Her presence in Heathrow Airport is a message to the world.

I see a Swiss airhostess, my friend Mustafa Abbas was on her flight.  He was travelling from Switzerland to Austria.  The plane took off; it was not a long trip. My friend Mustafa Abbas, who had a beautiful beard, went to the toilet and performed wudu’ (wash for the prayer).  When he came out, the hostess looked and saw water on the floor.  She knew nothing about Islam.  He sat on his chair to pray and said, “Allahu Akbar” (Allah is greater).  This is a true story.  The hostess thought this was an attempt to blow up the plane and that this was the expression said in bombing operations.  The airhostess reported him.  The plane performed an emergency landing.  They went back to the same airport.  Mustafa was arrested and the plane searched.

They found nothing and asked the hostess. She said, “I did not know this expression was for prayer, I thought it was for bombing.”

They released Mustafa and apologized to him.

I see in the scene Karima,  a Moroccan girl living in France and studying accountancy.  While Karima was studying in University, the French law forbidding hijab in school was passed.  Karima was already veiled at the time, but her accountancy teacher who hated Muslims, told her, “I will see your hair!”  She said, “I will wear a hat like the French posh girls do.”  He said, “Either I see your hair or you leave the class.”  The rest of the students interceded.  He eventually conceded but she had to sit at the end of the class.  This is part of the picture.

I see in the picture a German minister, who said to a delegation who wanted to put forward some demands for the Muslims, "Why are you in a rush, you keep having children and multiplying, and we are growing older and fewer.  In 20 years time, you will be the strongest force in Europe."

I see in the picture Dr. Walter, a professor in the University of Oxford.  I met him and asked him, “till when will this double retaliation continue?”  He said, “let us be practical.  Do you know how most Europeans perceive Muslims?”  This is what they think, “You came to our countries to benefit from freedom, to benefit from knowledge, prosperity and medical care.  What did you give us?  You shared our country with us but gave us nothing. You took but did not give.  You go around saying these are the words of your Prophet.  Look at Muslims in Europe.  How many of them are contributing and how many of them are not.”

I see in the picture Debbie.  She converted to Islam.  Her husband divorced her and her mother kicked her out.  She took her ten years old son Shean.  She worked in our organization, Right Start Foundation.  Her son asked her, “does Islam separate between us and our families?”  I started to take Shean with me to football practice and out for meals to cheer him up.  He once said to me, “This is the first time I feel that Islam is nice!” (Because of a football match)

I see in the picture an important western diplomat who met a delegation of business men in one of our Arabic countries.  His first question for them was “What is your dream for your country in 20 years time?”  He did not tell me the story, one of the members of the delegation related the details to me.  “How do you see it?”  They started to sweat and think hard.   They could come up with something but it would not be spot on.  However he continued, “but I see it so and so and so…”

I see in the picture hundreds like the artist of the caricatures, who wish for the Muslims to commit more mistakes, so they would get kicked out of Europe and no Muslims remain there.

I see in the picture my son Ali’s school.  A month before the start, the school sent a teacher to interview my wife and I.  She said, “Your son will join a school of mainly English pupils and some Muslims.  Is there something you would like us to take into consideration for him as a Muslim, so that he does not feel that his home is saying something and the school is saying something else?”

I also see the day of Eid, last Eid.  I was performing Hajj (pilgrimage).  My son was in England.  He received a gift from school at home, “we learnt that this is a day of celebration for Muslims, Happy Eid” They do not know who I am but they sent them to all Muslim children.

I also see one of the most popular chicken restaurants in Britain.  It is called “Nando’s”.  It started opening branches serving Halal chicken only.

I also see one of the biggest international banks, HSBC, opening inside Britain, branches for Islamic banking.  And when I asked why the halal restaurants and why the Islamic banking they said, “You are 20 millions reaching 30 millions soon.  We have to address your demands to increase our profit.”

I hope I have succeeded in depicting a true picture.

Since the events of Denmark, I have been saying something that needed some clarification.

I said there are three squares:  one square for the Muslims and one square for the enemies of Islam and a huge square for neutral non-Muslims.

The enemies of Islam are trying to pull this huge square to their camp because they failed to confront Muslims on their own.  Their solution was to look for the neutral side and take it to the enemy camp and look for ways to fulfil this.

Before getting to the three squares, I had to tell you the stories first, so that you understand what they represent.  A square for Muslims who are suffering great injustice and a square for enemies of Islam who want to destroy Islam and Muslims,

and a square that would be a great loss.  You have been following from the beginning.  Be careful there is a part in the film, I do not know if you see it or not,, but is a big part of it.  This part says that the 20 million living in the west are a deposit in the hands of the west, be it government or people.  The 20 million in the west that, based on what you have heard today, might have a clearer future.

Does anyone see it like this?

The 20 or 30 millions could be exterminated tomorrow and kicked out of Europe.

Never mind the 20 million, what about the 200 000 Muslims in Denmark?  The Islamic community, I am trying to explain why they behave in a different way than us and why Muslims’ reactions in Europe are different to Muslims’ reactions in our countries.

I am an eyewitness and I see around me.  Therefore this is not just a matter of Islamic law and halal and haram.  It is a matter of seeing the reality and the whole picture.

Therefore the 20 or 30 million Muslims living in Europe could be kicked out of Europe or slaughtered.  You might think I am exaggerating.

Have you forgotten Andalusia?

Or is it because it is an old story, 500 years old?

Have you forgotten what happened to us after 800 years in Spain?

We were kicked out and Muslims were burnt.

A great number were killed or tortured by the Spanish inquisitions.

Not just that, many of them were forced into Christianity once more.

Is it not what happened?

What do we contribute to this cause today?

Nothing, it is so old. It’s been 500 years.

What if this happens to Muslims in Europe today?

To the 200 000 Muslims?

What will we offer in terms of government, people and armies?

You might say this was 500 years ago, history will not repeat itself again.

Let me then tell you about what happened more than 10 years ago, in Bosnia.  Muslims suffered an ethnic cleansing in Bosnia and were buried in collective tombs.

What have we done for Bosnia in terms of government people and army?

There were reaction (the first principle) and we shed tears.

We love Allah and we love Muslims.  We are sincere in our reactions but we only face up to attacks in the past and present but never in the future.  I am back to the first principle.

The second principle says “because of what we have deposited in Europe, and for the sake of the future of Muslims in Europe… because of these two things…”the second principle says,“ Aren't coexistence and discussion better?" leave out the word better, an important alternative.  There are files to be opened and roles to be played.  Think about these people and see the whole picture.

Do you understand now what is the meaning of the word coexistence that I have been promoting for the last two years?  It made me do my thesis in the PhD as “Islam and coexisting with the other side.” because this is the meaning that I see.

What do we want for Muslims in Europe: isolation, confrontation or coexisting?

Take the story that I related to you today, with all its variations and wide spectrum and see what we want.

The veiled girl of 17 years in Denmark is also our sister and we worry about her.  She does the daily trip to the University of Copenhagen with her hijab.

Andalusia, 500 years ago and Bosnia more than 10 years ago.

We have to realise that emotions are a great thing, feelings for Islam are great, but the mind that plans and sees the whole picture is very important.

The prophet (SAWS) could have responded to the emotions of Khabbab and prayed, but he got upset and asked him to have a vision.  “But you are hasty” learn this hadith and ponder upon it.  Today’s speech is not for Denmark but for the 20 years to come.  I hope we give it our attention and let it reach the world and Muslims.  I have spent long hours praying before I sat down to write it, “I beseech you Allah to make me say what is of use to the nation of your beloved Muhammad”.

These were the two principles:

One: planning for the future,

Two: coexisting and dialogue are a better option for spirits and for the preservation of this religion.

I ask Allah to benefit and preserve this nation and grant it strength.  Inshallah, the future holds great prosperity for this nation.

Peace be upon you all.
