2 *  I was sent to complement high moral standards

I was sent but to complement high moral standards

This article was written by Mr. Amr Khaled in “Al-Yaqdha” magazine on 4 February,2004.

A fact confirmed by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) through his life, relationships and guidance. His manners were a reflection of the Qur’an. That’s why I think that the youth’s moral setting is one of the tasks that must be carried out! Morals cover life as a whole, all man’s behavior and his relationship with Allah, with himself, with others and even with all creatures.

If  pedagogy tackles man’s abilities and endowments, morals, on the other hand, channels these endowments towards straightness  and renders good manners deep-rooted behavioral habits!

But before anything else, we have to make the faith in Allah (SWT) and in His Prophet (PBUH) a fixed belief that establishes in the hearts and stands firm in the souls. This belief should result in shifting all the abilities and organs of the body towards obeying Allah's (SWT) orders and yielding to Him to earn His love and His satisfaction. Describing the believers, Allah (SWT) says what can be translated as, “For, Believers are those who, when Allah is mentioned, feel a tremor in their hearts, and when they hear His signs rehearsed, find their faith strengthened, and put (all) their trust in their Lord; Who establish regular prayers and spend (freely) out of the gifts We have given them for sustenance: Such in truth are the believers: they have grades of dignity with their Lord, and forgiveness, and generous sustenance” (TMQ, Al-Anfal:2-4)[1].

Some of the goals of the youth’s moral setting:

-          Changing the youth’s psychological and intellectual tendencies that contradict social behavior into an appropriate behavior that is consistent with faith, social values and aspects of moral behavior.

-          Achieving equilibrium between the theoretical moral values and the ones that are practiced in society; and choosing the customs and traditions that go with the fixed Islamic values. It is this equilibrium that achieves a better image of society.

-          Linking economic boom and social adaptation with morals. For, economic boom does not rely only on financial abilities but also on moral behavior that protects public and private rights and deepens the sense of responsibility.

Islam has its own clear course as far as professional  morals  are concerned; for work is a worship in itself.  The achievement of these goals require the availability of some means:

-          The social environment which surrounds the youth, that influences them and constructs their relationship with the others; starting from school to university, family, mosque and society.

-          School syllabus have an important impact on enhancing morals and acquiring experience in a practical  direct or indirect way.

-          Exhibiting the impact of both good and bad morals on the existence of nations through practical and convincing means based on detailed statistics.

-          Pious company for a young person is easily impressed by the people around him; that is why the Prophet (PBUH) compared a good companion to a musk seller and a bad one to an iron-smith. Each of which has an impact on him in a way or another, especially man has a tendency to imitate his friends.

-          Studying the biography of Prophets, Messengers, heroes and geniuses, especially that of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) who should be the first role model for all humanity. Young people are always looking for a role model, so let’s be keen on presenting a good one to them.

-          Unifying the efforts to enhance good morals and spread virtue among the nation’s youth through the media: television, radio, theatre, cinema, books and magazines. All these means can overcome obstacles especially with the spread of satellites and internet.

These were some goals that will help youth find their way towards faith and straightness and will make them join life makers and be the promising future for our nation.
