Paradise in Our Homes

Episode 29

In the name of Allah[1], the All-Merciful, the Ever-Merciful.  All prayers and peace of Allah be upon Prophet Muhammad (SAWS[2]).

Today is going to be the last episode of the first part of our program.  We are going to continue the second part after Ramadan Insha’ Allah.

In this episode, I will recap what was said in the previous episodes throughout this month, and cast light on the plan for the next part of this program.  Let me first remind you of the aim of our program, and that is to regain family bonds. It is therefore crucial to lay down a foundation of simple yet vital rules, which will enable you to solve future family problems, and this is the aim of the first part of this program.

I would first like to mention to you the circumstances surrounding the making of this program. Before deciding to air it during Ramadan, we asked people’s opinions as to whether it would be a proper subject to discuss during this holy month. Most people rejected our idea, claiming that this is not the time to discuss these family issues, as Ramadan is a spiritual month and we should devote it to worship and prayer. We, however, looked at it from a different perspective; Ramadan is the month of reformation and positive change, and so we should take this chance to reform ourselves especially that this program is directed at reforming the inside of our homes. Its worth mentioning that throughout the Islamic history, Ramadan was the month of jihad[3] (struggle). In addition to being the month of fasting, prayers and Quraan, Ramadan has an added advantage: it is the month of the family.  All the family members gather at the same time for Iftar (breaking the fast after sunset).

Secondly, satans are chained in Ramadan.  You know that the most important target for satan is to wreck our homes.  I was touched by what the Prophet (SAWS) told us about satan, who asked his subjects about the most hideous thing they did on that day so that he would reward that satan and bring him to sit next to him on his own throne.  Each satan then boasted about their most wicked accomplishments. Some said they drove people to kill, steal, etc, but these actions did not satisfy Satan enough, until one told him that he managed to break up a marriage, than satan praises him, told him that he is the one, and let him sit on his throne.  Satan’s main goal is to wreck our homes strike their very foundations, so that the whole society would fall apart.

I would also like to talk about how this programe started.  We started preparing for it two years ago. First we began by conducting a field research to identify the problems of the Arab world.  We chose four countries as our sample: Moroco, Saudia Arabia, Egypt and Jordan.  A professional team spotted the problems and analyzed them.  Second, we collected all the Masters and doctorate theses that were written during the last 10 years in Egypt and summerized them.

Third, we formed a commitee of professional scholars from a number of universities to help us find solutions for the  problems identified. Last but not least, during the last two years, we received more than a thousand emails on a daily basis from people sending us their problems on www.amrkhaled.net.  It helped us to form a realistic idea about people’s problems.  Here I would like to tell you that after Ramadan Insha’Allah I, along with a profissional team, will start handling those problems in detail to find appropriate solutions for them.

This amount of preparatory work resulted in two things.  First: a set of key rules the family should possess before we start dealing with the problems, and this is what we already covered during Ramadan.  Second: an analysis of the problems and how to deal with it, and this is what we will do, in detail, after Ramadan. This second part of the program will rely on the first part covered in Ramadan and will refer us back to specific key rules in certain episodes that will be available on http://www.amrkhaled.net. Some of the topics that will be covered include unregistered marriage, drug abuse, polygamy, domestic violence, infidelity, etc.

To quickly recap some of the 20 key rules (also available on www.amrkhaled.net:

1-     Worship Allah (SWT) together.

2-     Feel the value of the family.

3-     Be merciful to your family.

4-     Envision a dream for your family.

5-     Remember the blessings of having a family.

6-     The fundamentality of the role of the father.

7-     The father as a role model.

8-     The fundamentality of the role of the mother.

9-     The language of emotion comes before the language of reason.

10- Find alternatives to punishment.

11- Find good company.

12- Love between spouses.

13- Restoring kinship ties.

I would like to tell you how happy I am with the audience reaction after watching the program.  A mother told me that she has a daughter, studying in the US, and the relation between them became so cold.  After she saw the episode of “The language of emotion” she sent her daughter a short but emotional message.  To her surprise, she received a very long and warm reply from her daughter.  The mother never thought that emotions could have that dramatic influence.

I also was touched by a father, who saw the episode of “The fundamentality of the role of the father”.  He was supposed to go for a business trip during Eid.  However, after the episode, he changed the date of his flight for the sake of gathering the family in Eid

Many married couples told me that they managed to get closer to each other, when they worshiped Allah (SWT) together during Ramadan.

At the end of this episode, I have some recommendations:

1-     Do not lose the high spirit you gained during Ramadan.  Do not abandon the rituals you used to perform during this month.  Make an agreement with your spouse, son, daughter, etc. to keep performing certain worships together, twice a week for example.  Why not call for a weekly family gathering, in which you would recite Qur’an, pray two raka’a (one unit of Islamic prayer) and supplicate?

2-      Ramadan was a good chance to throw Satan out of your home, so try to avoid committing sins, for this is what would bring him back into your home.  Show mercy while treating your family members.  Allah (SWT) says what can be translated as, And indeed Iblîs already verified his expectation of them, so they closely followed him, except a group of the believers.” (TMQ, 34:20) [4]Be careful not to help verify Satan’s expectations by following him, but show mercy to the others.

3-     Be positive and proactive, begin with yourself; do not wait for the others to start reforming.

I hope that these episodes were beneficial to you all, and I hope it helped bring back some happiness and serenity into our homes and our family closer together. Please don’t allow Satan back into your homes after Allah cast him out. My only intention for this program is for the unity of our ummah (Muslim nation) and the happiness of our homes and Allah is my witness. Have a blessed Eid.

[1] The word Allah is the Arabic term for God. Although the use of the word "Allah" is most often associated with Islam, it is not used exclusively by Muslims; Arab Christians and Arabic-speaking Jews also use it to refer to the One God. The Arabic word expresses the unique characteristics of the One God more precisely than the English term. Whereas the word "Allah" has no plural form in Arabic, the English form does. Allah is the God worshipped by all Prophets, from Adam to Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus and Muhammad.

[2] Salla Allah alayhe Wa Salam [All Prayers and Peace of Allah be upon him].

[3] Any earnest striving in the way of Allah, involving personal, physical, intellectual or military effort, for righteousness and against wrong-doing. “Lesser Jihad”: fighting to protect Islam from attack or oppression. In such fighting, no woman, child or innocent civilian is to be harmed, and no tree is to be cut down. “Greater Jihad”: internal struggle for the soul (nafs) against evil and temptation.

[4] TMQ=Translation of the Meaning of the Qur'an.  This translation is for the realized meaning, so far, of the stated (Surah:Ayah) of the Qur'an.  Reading the translated meaning of the Qur'an can never replace reading it in Arabic, the language in which it was revealed.
